How to Renew Your PMP Certification: Requirements, Points and Deadlines
Read this guide in Arabic: اقرأ بالعربية
Passing the exam is the hard part. Keeping the credential is administration, and yet a surprising number of professionals in the Kingdom let it slide, usually in the third year when a project consumes everything. Here is exactly what PMI expects, how the timing works, and the least painful ways to collect what you need while working in Saudi Arabia.
The renewal cycle in one paragraph
Your PMP runs on a three year cycle that starts the day you pass the exam. In each cycle you must earn 60 professional development units, report them in PMI's online continuing certification system, and pay the renewal fee. Do all three before your cycle end date and you stay active. Miss the deadline and you enter suspension. That is the whole mechanism.
Two details worth knowing. You can complete renewal at any point in the cycle once the PDU requirement is met, so there is no need to wait until the final months. And PDUs earned in the last 12 months of your cycle can carry over to the next one, up to a limit set by PMI, which is a good reason to front load rather than scramble.
What the 60 PDUs must consist of
One PDU equals one hour of qualifying learning or contribution. PMI splits them into two categories and applies minimums and maximums:
- Education: minimum 35 PDUs. These must include at least 8 PDUs in each of the three PMI Talent Triangle areas: Ways of Working, Power Skills and Business Acumen. The remaining education PDUs can sit in any of the three.
- Giving Back: maximum 25 PDUs. Volunteering, creating content, presenting, and working as a practitioner. Working as a practitioner is capped at 8 PDUs and can only be claimed once per cycle.
The Talent Triangle minimums are where people trip. Engineers and planners in Saudi Arabia tend to hoard technical education and arrive at renewal with 40 PDUs in Ways of Working and nothing in Power Skills or Business Acumen. Check the split at the end of year one, not year three.
Also note that Giving Back is optional. If you prefer, all 60 can be education PDUs, and for busy professionals that is often the simpler route.
Fees, deadlines and the reporting process
The process itself is short. Log in to your PMI dashboard, report each activity in the continuing certification system with the date, hours and category, wait for it to be accepted, then pay the renewal fee when PMI prompts you. Certificates and confirmation arrive by email.
On fees: the certification renewal fee is separate from PMI membership. Members pay less. At the time of writing the renewal fee has commonly been quoted at around USD 60 for PMI members and about USD 150 for non members, and PMI applies regional pricing, so check the current figure inside your own dashboard before assuming. If you already hold membership for the exam discount, keeping it usually pays for itself at renewal.
On deadlines: you must earn and report your PDUs before your cycle end date. PMI allows renewal payment to be submitted no later than 90 days after the cycle end date, which is a grace window for payment, not a license to keep collecting PDUs late. Do not plan around it.
What happens if you miss the deadline
You are placed in suspended status for 12 months. During that year you may not call yourself a PMP or use the designation after your name, which matters in the Kingdom because many employers verify credentials at contract renewal and some tender submissions list certified staff. You can recover by earning the missing PDUs and completing renewal during the suspension period; your next cycle dates do not change.
If the suspension year passes without renewal, the certification expires. At that point there is no reporting your way back. You would have to reapply from scratch, meet the eligibility requirements again and retake the exam. We have sat with people going through that, and it is a bad afternoon. Set two calendar reminders now: one at 24 months into your cycle and one at 30 months.
Easy ways to earn PDUs while working in Saudi Arabia
You do not need to spend a fortune. In practice our alumni in Riyadh, Jeddah and Al Khobar collect most of their 60 like this:
- Short professional courses. A focused program earns education PDUs quickly and fills the Talent Triangle gaps deliberately. Our risk management for projects and agile and hybrid projects delivery programs cover Ways of Working, while program, portfolio and PMO leadership is a natural fit for Business Acumen. AI in project management is the one people are asking for most this year.
- Employer training you already attend. Contractor and operator training in the Eastern Province often qualifies. Log it at the time with the agenda and hours saved as evidence, because reconstructing it two years later is miserable.
- PMI chapter and industry events. Chapter meetings, webinars and conferences in the Kingdom all count as education PDUs, and they are among the cheapest hours available.
- Self directed reading and informal learning. Reading relevant books and standards, and structured discussions with peers, both qualify. Keep dated notes, since these categories are the ones an audit questions.
- Giving back through mentoring or speaking. Mentoring junior project staff, presenting internally, or writing about your delivery experience all earn PDUs within the 25 unit cap.
A practical tip our trainers give every graduating class: report each activity the same week it happens. The system takes five minutes per entry. The people who lose their credential are almost never short of learning; they are short of records.
If your PMP has lapsed and you need to sit the exam again, our PMP preparation course covers the current exam content outline, which changed in July 2026, and our first attempt study plan is written for people returning after time away. For the official rules in full, PMI publishes them on its certification maintenance page.
Frequently asked questions
How many PDUs do I need to renew my PMP?
Sixty PDUs in every three year cycle. At least 35 must be education PDUs, including a minimum of 8 in each Talent Triangle area, and no more than 25 can come from giving back activities.
How much does PMP renewal cost?
The renewal fee is separate from PMI membership and members pay less. At the time of writing it is commonly quoted at around USD 60 for members and about USD 150 for non members, subject to PMI regional pricing, so confirm the amount in your PMI dashboard.
What happens if my PMP expires?
Missing your cycle end date puts you into suspended status for 12 months, during which you cannot use the PMP designation. If you do not complete renewal within that year, the certification expires and you must reapply and sit the exam again.
Can I claim PDUs for my day job?
Yes, under the working as a practitioner category, but it is capped at 8 PDUs and can only be claimed once per cycle. It also counts against the 25 unit giving back maximum, so it is a supplement rather than a strategy.
Do unused PDUs carry over to the next cycle?
Only those earned in the final 12 months of your cycle, and only up to the limit PMI sets for your certification. PDUs earned earlier in the cycle expire with it, which is another reason to report as you go.
Where do I report my PDUs?
In the PMI continuing certification renewal system, reached from your PMI dashboard. Each entry needs the activity title, provider, dates, hours and category, and you should keep supporting evidence in case your claim is audited.
