ASCM Foundations of Supply Chain Management: The Beginner's Guide
Not everyone entering supply chain is ready for a 150 question professional exam, and ASCM built the Foundations of Supply Chain Management program for exactly that reason. It is, in ASCM's words, "the largest catalog of foundational supply chain education," designed to be "motivating, engaging and attainable for beginner to mid career professionals." What the Foundations program covers
ASCM structures Foundations as five self paced courses of nine modules each (about three hours per module, 27 hours per course), plus a shorter entry course:
- Foundations of Inventory Management, operations management, purpose and function of inventory, replenishment, lean inventory, purchasing and procurement, sourcing strategies, purchase order management
- Foundations of Distribution and Logistics, channel network design, distribution inventory and DRP, warehouse management, packaging and materials handling, transportation management and operations
- Foundations of Operations Planning, forecasting, demand management, S&OP, aggregate planning, master scheduling foundations and processes, operations systems
- Foundations of Manufacturing Management, modern manufacturing techniques aligned with business needs
- Foundations of Managing Operations, process and operations, project management, product design, process design, total quality management, statistical quality control, process improvement
- Introduction to Supply Chain Principles, a six module, ~18 hour primer sampling each of the above: distribution and logistics, manufacturing, planning, process and operations, inventory, and purchasing and procurement
How it differs from a certification
ASCM draws the line clearly: certifications (CPIM, CSCP, CLTD, CTSC) are proctored evaluations against a standard, carry post nominal letters and require maintenance; Foundations courses are "recognition of participation and completion", un proctored online assessments, a letter of completion and a digital badge, no maintenance, no letters after your name. They are the on ramp, not the destination.
Who should start here
New graduates, career changers, junior planners and buyers, warehouse and logistics coordinators, and non supply chain professionals (finance, sales, IT) who need to speak the language. If terms like MRP, S&OP, DRP or cycle counting are still fuzzy, Foundations is the right first step, and each course earns 24 points toward APICS certification maintenance if you go on to certify.
What comes next
