Supply Chain Training in Chennai: Skills to Look for in a Practical Course

Chennai is often called the Detroit of Asia, because so many cars, trucks and two wheelers are made in and around the city. Add one of India's oldest major ports, a busy electronics belt around Sriperumbudur and a long line of warehouses along the highways, and you have a city that runs on supply chains.

That also means a lot of supply chain jobs. And for anyone applying, there's a frustrating gap. Many courses teach the theory well, but employers in Chennai want people who can actually do the work from the first week: work out how much stock to order, cost a shipment, sort out a late supplier.

So if you're comparing options for supply chain training in Chennai, the most useful question isn't "what does this course cover?" It's "what will I be able to do when I finish?"

This guide answers that question. It lists six practical skills a good course should give you, with a simple example of where you'd use each one in a Chennai job.

What "practical" really means

Almost every course calls itself practical. Here's a simple way to test it.

Imagine it's your first week back at work after finishing the course. Can you sit down and do something you couldn't do before? Not just explain it, but actually do it, with real numbers and a real deadline?

If the answer is yes, the course was practical. If you can only describe the ideas, it was mostly theory. Theory matters, but on its own it won't help you much in an interview or on the job.

Keep that first week test in mind as you read the six skills below.

Six skills a practical supply chain course should give you

1. Working out how much stock to keep

You should be able to calculate a reorder point and a sensible level of safety stock, and explain your numbers to your manager.

Where you'd use it: an auto parts warehouse near Oragadam that keeps running short of fast moving parts while slow movers pile up.

Look for: exercises where you calculate stock levels yourself, not just read about them.

2. Working with real data in Excel

Most supply chain decisions still start in a spreadsheet. A good course should teach you to clean messy data, build simple formulas and pivot tables, and turn numbers into a clear summary.

Where you'd use it: pulling together a weekly report on late deliveries for an electronics plant in Sriperumbudur.

Look for: assignments that use spreadsheets with real looking data.

3. Costing a shipment

The price on a supplier's quote is rarely the full cost. You should be able to add up freight, insurance, duties, port charges and handling to find the total landed cost. You should also understand the Incoterms rules published by the International Chamber of Commerce, which set out who pays for what between buyer and seller.

Where you'd use it: comparing a local supplier with an overseas one whose goods arrive through Chennai port.

Look for: worked examples on landed cost and Incoterms.

4. Choosing and negotiating with suppliers

This is where supply chain and procurement meet. You should know how to compare suppliers on more than price, prepare for a negotiation and spot weak points in a contract.

Where you'd use it: renewing a packaging contract for an FMCG company with plants around the city.

Look for: negotiation role plays or supplier evaluation case studies.

5. Mapping how goods actually flow

You should be able to draw a simple map of how materials move from supplier to customer, and spot where time and money are being lost along the way.

Where you'd use it: finding out why orders from a warehouse on the Chennai to Bengaluru highway are taking two days longer than promised.

Look for: process mapping exercises and case studies.

6. Explaining a plan to other people

The best analysis is useless if nobody acts on it. You should be able to present a short plan to managers from sales, finance or production, and handle their questions.

Where you'd use it: the monthly meeting where sales wants more stock and finance wants less.

Look for: presentations, group work or feedback on how you communicate, not just exams.
