Corporate Training in Pune: Building a Needs Based Program for Your Team

Pune has been called the Oxford of the East for decades because of its many colleges and universities. But for most working people in the city, the learning that really shapes their careers happens after college, on the job.

That’s why companies here spend real money on training. The trouble is, a lot of it doesn’t change much. A popular course gets picked, people attend, and a few months later the same problems are still there.

The fix is simple to say and harder to do: build training around what your team actually needs. This is called a needs based program. In this guide, we’ll show you how to build one in five steps, using one example from start to finish.

Meet our example: CareWell Hospitals

To keep things practical, we’ll follow one made up organization through every step. Let’s call it CareWell Hospitals, a growing private hospital group with three hospitals in Pune.

CareWell has a problem that will sound familiar to anyone who manages supplies. Some medicines and surgical items keep running out. Others sit on the shelf until they expire and have to be thrown away. And purchase costs are going up every quarter.

CareWell’s director of operations wants to fix this, and someone suggests sending “the team” for training. Let’s see how CareWell can do it properly.

Step 1: Start with the problem, not a course

Sending “the team” for training sounds helpful, but it’s really a guess. Before choosing any course, CareWell needs to be clear about the problem and what is causing it.

The problem is easy to see: stockouts, expired stock and rising costs. The causes take a little more digging. Some will be about skills. Others may be about processes or systems, and no course will fix those. Finding that out now saves money later.

Step 2: Find out where the gaps are

A simple way to do this is to look at three levels: the organization, the jobs and the people. This idea comes from researchers William McGehee and Paul Thayer, who described it back in 1961, and it is still widely used today.

The organization. What does CareWell need? Two things: the right supplies when doctors and nurses need them, and less money wasted on expired stock. After talking to its operations, purchase and nursing heads, CareWell finds three causes. Supplier contracts are weak, stock levels are set by habit instead of data, and each hospital orders in its own way.

The jobs. Which jobs are closest to the problem? At CareWell there are three: the buyers who choose suppliers, the store and pharmacy staff who decide how much to stock, and the senior nurses who teach new nurses how to request and use supplies.

The people. Who needs help with what? A short skills check and a talk with each manager show that:

  • the senior buyer negotiates well but needs help with contracts
  • the newer buyers need the basics of procurement
  • the store and pharmacy staff need better inventory skills
  • the senior nurses know their work well but have never been taught how to train others

Now CareWell knows exactly who needs what, and why.

Step 3: Match each gap to the right training

With the gaps clear, choosing training becomes much easier. Each group at CareWell gets only what it needs:

  • Newer buyers learn procurement basics through CIPS Level 3 or the Certified International Procurement Professional (CIPP).
  • The senior buyer focuses on contracts with Mastering Contracts for Procurement Professionals.
  • The purchase head takes the Certified International Sourcing Manager (CISM) to build a stronger supplier base.
  • Store and pharmacy staff build supply chain and inventory skills through the CISCP program.
  • Senior nurses take the Certified Master Trainer (CMT), so they can train new nurses well.

Nobody is sent on a course they don’t need, and the training budget goes straight to the problem.

Step 4: Plan around people’s working hours

Hospitals run around the clock, and CareWell’s nurses and store staff work in shifts. Taking them away for full day classes simply won’t work. So CareWell uses short sessions timed around shift changes, plus self paced study that people can do at home.

The same thinking applies to any organization in Pune. Plants in Chakan and Pimpri Chinchwad also run in shifts, while IT teams in Hinjewadi and Kharadi often work hybrid and do better with live online sessions. Fit the training to the working day, not the other way around.

Step 5: Check whether it worked

Before training starts, CareWell agrees three measures: how often key items run out, how much expired stock is thrown away, and how much it spends on its main supplies. It checks these after three months and again after six, and asks ward heads whether people are working differently.

If the numbers improve, CareWell has clear proof the training worked. If they don’t, it goes back to Step 2 to find what was missed.

How Blue Ocean Academy helps Pune teams build needs based programs

We start where this guide starts: with the problem you’re trying to solve, not a course list. Once the gaps are clear, we can draw on a wide catalog to build a program that fits your people, your shifts and your budget, delivered through live online sessions and self paced study.

Procurement and sourcing. For buying teams, we offer CIPS Level 3, Level 4 and Level 5 through our India entity, a CIPS approved center for distance learning, along with the Certified International Procurement Professional (CIPP), Certified International Sourcing Manager (CISM), Certified International Commercial Contracts Manager (CICCM) and Mastering Contracts for Procurement Professionals.

Supply chain and planning. We prepare planners and supply chain teams for ASCM’s CPIM and CSCP, and our CISCP program builds supply chain and inventory skills for store and operations teams.

People and leadership. The Certified Master Trainer (CMT) helps senior staff, supervisors and team leads train others, and our HR programs support HR teams as they grow.

AI and digital skills. Programs such as Mastering AI in Procurement and Supply Chain help teams get comfortable with new tools.

Frequently asked questions

What is a needs based corporate training program?

It is a program built around a specific business problem and the actual skill gaps behind it, rather than a standard course given to everyone. Different people get different training, depending on what they need.

How do you run a training needs analysis?

A simple approach looks at three levels: what the organization needs to achieve, what the key tasks require, and which people have gaps. Talking to managers and running short skills checks usually reveals where training will make the biggest difference.

How can corporate training in Pune fit around shift work?

Shorter sessions timed around shift changes, self paced study and training senior staff as internal trainers all help hospitals, plants and other shift based teams learn without disrupting their work.

Can procurement and supply chain training be part of a corporate program?

Yes. Programs such as CIPS qualifications, the Certified International Procurement Professional (CIPP) and ASCM’s CPIM can be combined into one plan for buying and planning teams.

How do we measure whether the training worked?

Agree on business measures before training starts, such as stockouts, expired stock or purchase costs, and review them at three and six months. Also ask managers whether people are working differently.
