The short answer

If your day is recruitment, onboarding, payroll inputs, appraisals and policy administration, take CHRMP. If you own the HR function, its budget, its structure and its systems, take CHRM. If you advise other organisations on HR, CHRC. Most people in India who search for "CHRP" are looking for the first of these; the professional programme is now titled CHRMP.

A note on the name "CHRP"

Two different things are called CHRP. In Canada, CHRP (Certified Human Resources Professional) is a designation awarded by provincial HR associations under their own rules. In the Gulf and India, "CHRP" has for years been the marketed name of the American Certification Institute's professional-level HR programme, which is what Blue Ocean delivers and which is now titled CHRMP. If you hold or are considering the Canadian designation, this page is not about it. If you have seen "CHRP certification" advertised by training providers in India and the UAE, it is the ACI programme described here.

What ACI awards, and how

The American Certification Institute awards its designations on completion of the programme and its examination. Blue Ocean Academy delivers the programmes live online in cohorts, with exercises, case studies, assessments and group discussion, and a self-paced study option. Completing the programme and passing its assessment leads to the ACI designation; completing the course alone does not. We make no further claims about ACI's standing, and you should weigh the ACI route on what it is: a structured, applied programme with an examined designation, rather than a standalone high-stakes exam of the HRCI kind.

CHRMP: the professional level

The programme is built around six areas:

  1. HRM foundations and strategy — the evolution and fundamentals of HRM, HR as a strategic partner, the strategic management process, the shift from HR to HR business partnering.
  2. Job analysis and design — processes and methods, competency mapping, job design and de-jobbing.
  3. Talent acquisition and workforce planning — strategic workforce planning and forecasting, sourcing, assessment and selection.
  4. Learning and development — training versus learning versus development, training needs analysis, design and delivery, methodologies, evaluation.
  5. Performance management — goal setting, monitoring, appraisal and development conversations.
  6. Compensation and total rewards — compensation theory, job evaluation, pay structures, total rewards communication.

The outcomes are practical: produce job descriptions and competency frameworks, build data-driven hiring plans, run structured interviews, conduct a training needs analysis, implement a performance management system, build equitable pay bands. It suits HR professionals and executives who want to master core practice across the employee lifecycle, and recruiters widening into generalist roles. Course page.

CHRM: the manager level

Seven modules, each pitched at someone who owns the function:

  1. Strategic HR implementation — formulating and implementing HR policy in line with organisational values.
  2. Organisation design — structures, spans, operating models.
  3. HR operations and automation — strategic versus operational HR, HR systems, automation and AI use cases.
  4. HR in a global context.
  5. Organisational development — culture, diagnostics, change.
  6. HR budgets and audits.
  7. HR and process excellence.

The programme's stated aim is to equip HR professionals at managerial and senior levels "to drive organizational performance through strategic people management". It suits HR managers, HR business partners stepping into leadership, and heads of HR in growing companies. Course page.

CHRC and CIRS: the specialist routes

  • Certified Human Resource Consultant (CHRC) — four modules: HR leadership and strategic foundation, business acumen for HR consultants, HR operations and talent management, HR analytics and data-driven decision-making. For consultants and advisers who need to audit an HR function, identify gaps and recommend improvements. Course page.
  • Certified International Recruitment Specialist (CIRS) — for recruiters and talent acquisition leads at managerial and senior levels: recruitment strategy, strategic staffing, sourcing, screening, selection and onboarding of global talent. Course page.

ACI versus HRCI: the comparison most people actually need

ACI (CHRMP, CHRM)HRCI (PHRi, SPHRi)
NatureApplied programme with an examined designationIndependent credential earned by passing HRCI's exam
Entry ruleSet by programme level; no published years-and-degree ladderPHRi: 1 to 4 years of professional-level HR experience depending on degree; SPHRi: 4 to 7 years plus documented local employment-law knowledge
ExamWithin the programme90 scored questions in 2 h 15 min (PHRi); 115 in 2 h 45 min (SPHRi); Pearson VUE or OnVUE
ValidityPer ACIThree years; 60 recertification credits or retake
Fees to the bodyPer ACIHRCI exam and application fees in US dollars
Best fitPeople who learn by doing and want structure; employers that value applied programmesPeople who want a widely specified international credential and can meet the eligibility ladder

Many Indian HR professionals do both: CHRMP early, PHRi once they qualify, or CHRM alongside SPHRi. The two are not competing claims on the same thing. HR certification in India sets all the bodies side by side; HRCI certification in India covers the four HRCI credentials in depth.

Delivery in India

All ACI programmes run live online in cohorts, with recordings and a self-paced option, so the course is the same in Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai or Kolkata. Advisors are available in person at our New Delhi, Noida, Pune, Hyderabad and Kochi centres; the Delhi centre has its own HR courses in Delhi page. Tuition is shown in Indian rupees on the course pages for visitors in India; ACI's fees are separate and stated in the enquiry reply.

Choosing, in four questions

  1. Do you deliver HR, lead it, or advise on it? Deliver: CHRMP. Lead: CHRM. Advise: CHRC.
  2. Do you want an applied programme or a standalone exam? Programme: ACI. Exam: HRCI.
  3. Does your employer name a body? Follow it.
  4. Are you a recruiter first? CIRS, then CHRMP for breadth.

Frequently asked questions

What is the CHRM full form? Certified Human Resource Manager, the manager-level programme of the American Certification Institute.

Is CHRP the same as CHRMP? In this catalogue, yes: the ACI professional-level programme formerly marketed as CHRP is now titled Certified Human Resource Management Professional (CHRMP). The Canadian CHRP designation is a different credential from a different body.

Is CHRM certification recognised in India? ACI designations are held by HR professionals in India and the Gulf and are examined within the programme. Recognition is employer-specific; check what your target employers value, and consider pairing with an HRCI credential if they specify one.

Can I take CHRM without CHRMP? The manager programme assumes managerial experience rather than the professional programme; ask the advisor to check your background against the programme's expectations.

How is the ACI programme assessed? Through the programme's examination and assessments, within the course, not through an external test centre.
