CPIM 9.0 vs CPIM 8.0: What Changed and What It Means for Candidates
Every five years or so ASCM re validates the APICS bodies of knowledge through a job task analysis, and in 2026 the CPIM moved from version 8.0 to 9.0. If you are mid preparation, or comparing older study notes with the current Learning System, here is exactly what changed.
The key dates
- 4 November 2025, updated CPIM exam content manual (ECM 9.0) released
- 2 February 2026, last day to buy CPIM 8.0 bundles and Learning Systems
- 3 February 2026, CPIM 9.0 bundles and Learning Systems on sale
- 31 May 2026, last day to sit the CPIM 8.0 exam
- 1 June 2026, first day of the CPIM 9.0 exam
ASCM was clear that "at no time will both exams be live", since June 2026 the only CPIM exam is 9.0.
What changed in the structure
8.0 had eight modules with a single "Plan and Manage Supply" domain (weighted 16%). 9.0 has nine modules: that domain is now split into Plan and Manage Internal Supply Sources (master scheduling, capacity planning, MRP, capacity requirements, managing disruptions) and Plan and Manage External Supply Sources (suppliers and procurement, purchasing, risk, sustainability, waste and reverse logistics). ASCM's summary: the update "sharpens its focus on planning and scheduling and introduces separate domains for supply planning and execution."
The other modules carry over in spirit, strategy alignment, S&OP, demand, inventory, detailed schedules, distribution, and quality/continuous improvement/technology, with refreshed content in the 2026 Learning System.
What stayed the same
Exam mechanics: 150 questions (130 scored), 3.5 hours, 200 to 350 scale, 300 to pass, single exam format, Pearson VUE or OnVUE, no formal prerequisites, 75 maintenance points every five years.
What candidates should do
- Study only from the 2026 (9.0) Learning System, older module notes will not map to the split supply domains.
- Give internal supply the time it deserves: it is the largest learning module.
- Expect calculation questions in scheduling and inventory, as before.
