The automotive belt is the local supply chain
The Government of India's own description is blunt about the scale: "The Pune automotive cluster is one of the largest in India, providing direct and indirect employment to over 500,000 people", and "it is also a major export hub, contributing over 25% of India's total auto exports."
The geography has a name — the Pune–Chakan–Talegaon belt. The Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation, the statutory state agency established under the MIDC Act 1961, designates a Pune-Chakan-Talegaon-Satara cluster of 8,000 acres, whose listed sectors include both Auto & Components and Logistics. MIDC's land-allotment system lists the industrial areas that make it up: Pimpri-Chinchwad, Talegaon, Chakan Phase-1, Ranjangaon, Jejuri, Kurkumbh, Baramati and others.
For a supply chain professional, that translates into a specific working reality: multi-tier supplier networks, schedule stability, inbound logistics to assembly lines, and inventory held against production plans rather than retail demand.
How goods actually leave Pune
Pune is inland, so its container traffic runs to the coast by rail.
Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority lists an inland container depot with the code CCH at Chinchwad, at the "Inland Container Depot Railway Goods Shed, Chinchwad Pune", with a scheduled service of "Pune to JNPT/NSICT/GTIL-weekly (24 hours transit)" and the same weekly service back. The gateway it serves is the country's largest container port — JNPA describes itself as "Ranked 22nd among the top 100 Container Ports in the world", handling "around 50% of the total containerised cargo volume, across the major ports of India".
At state level, the Maharashtra Logistics Policy 2024, approved by the State Cabinet in August 2024, designates Pune – Purandar as one of five State Logistic Hubs of 500 acres each, alongside a Navi Mumbai–Pune International Logistics Mega Hub.
Two clarifications, because competitor pages get both wrong. Pune is not on the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor — DFCCIL's alignment runs from JNPT to Dadri via Vadodara, Ahmedabad, Palanpur, Phulera and Rewari, and does not pass through Pune. And there is no Multi-Modal Logistics Park at Pune; the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways names the five under development as Jogighopa, Chennai, Bengaluru, Nagpur and Indore.
Pune's logistics story is strong enough without borrowing facts that belong elsewhere.
The institutions are here too
The Automotive Research Association of India is headquartered in Pune at Kothrud and is "affiliated to the Ministry of Heavy Industries and is recognized by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research". ACMA, the national auto-component industry body, maintains a Pune office on the old Mumbai–Pune highway at Shivaji Nagar.

Where you will sit your exam
Pune's Pearson VUE locator returns around 30 test centres. Unlike Delhi, Noida and Hyderabad, these are third-party centres rather than a Pearson-operated site — which makes no difference to the exam itself, but is worth knowing if you have a preference.
ASCM credentials — CPIM, CSCP and CLTD — are delivered through Pearson VUE test centres or online proctoring. One limitation to respect: Pearson VUE states that "some exams for APICS require special arrangements and may not be available at all of the test centers listed", and per-credential availability sits behind a candidate login. So confirm your specific exam at your chosen centre before you commit to a date.
For CIPS, the only approved exam centre in India is in Bengaluru, roughly 735 km away. In practice, candidates here sit under remote invigilation. Note that the essay-style Constructed Response papers used at Diploma level run only in March, May, July and November.

If you had to pick one credential that fits Pune more than any other Indian city, it is CPIM. Production and inventory planning is precisely what an automotive supplier network runs on.
