Online or Classroom? Choosing How to Study in India

This decision gets made on convenience and then regretted on results. It is worth ten minutes of thought, because the right answer depends on things most people do not consider until they are three modules behind.

What genuinely changes, and what does not

What does not change: the syllabus, the exam, the credential, and who awards it. An ASCM credential earned after online study is the same credential earned after classroom study. There is no asterisk on the certificate, and no employer can tell which you did.

What does change: completion rates, pacing, and how quickly you get unstuck.

That is the honest framing. The credential is identical; the probability that you finish it is not.

Choose classroom if this sounds like you

You have started a self-paced course before and not finished it. This is the single most useful predictor. Be honest about it.
You need a fixed commitment to protect your study time from work and family. A scheduled session in a room is harder to skip than a video you can always watch tomorrow.
You learn by arguing. Supply chain and procurement are judgement disciplines. A lot of the value is in hearing how someone else would have handled the same supplier.
Your employer is paying and wants evidence of attendance.

Choose online if this sounds like you

Your work travels. Plant visits, port runs and site work do not fit a fixed weekly slot.
You are disciplined and already know the basics. Prior knowledge makes self-paced study far more viable.
You are not near one of our centres. We have five India locations — Delhi, Noida, Pune, Hyderabad and Kochi. If you are not within reach of one, online is not a compromise, it is the sensible route.
Your credential's exam is remote anyway. More on this below, because it matters.

The factor almost nobody considers: how you sit the exam

Study mode and exam mode are separate decisions, and in India they often point in different directions.

ASCM credentials — CPIM, CSCP, CLTD — are examined through Pearson VUE test centres or online proctoring. Test centres are widely available: Delhi, Noida and Hyderabad each have a Pearson-operated centre, and Pune and Kochi have around thirty third-party centres each. So you have a genuine choice of exam setting.

One caveat to check before you book travel: Pearson VUE states that "some exams for APICS require special arrangements and may not be available at all of the test centers listed", and per-credential availability is only visible once you log in as a candidate. Confirm your specific exam at your specific centre.

CIPS is different, and this surprises people. There is only one approved CIPS exam centre in the whole of India, in Bengaluru. In practice, candidates across India sit under remote invigilation — which CIPS supports, stating that "all our exams are computer-based and you can choose to take your exams at an exam centre or remotely".

So if you are taking a CIPS qualification, your exam is very likely to be remote regardless of how you studied. Worth knowing before you build a preference around sitting in a room.

Timing, which constrains both modes equally

CIPS runs five exam series a year, plus a January sitting. But September and January are Objective Response only — CIPS notes that "CIPS centre venues and CR exams are not available for this series". Because the essay-style Constructed Response format is what Diploma level uses, a Level 4 student has four usable windows: March, May, July and November.

This catches people out. Someone finishing their studies in August discovers the next usable sitting for their module is November.

Work backwards from the exam date, not forwards from your start date. It is the single most useful planning habit for any of these credentials.

The blended reality

Most people do not study purely one way. A typical pattern is scheduled sessions for the difficult modules, self-paced work for the familiar ones, and a concentrated revision period before the exam.

Our programmes run in both formats depending on the course, and availability by format changes over time. Rather than guess from this page, ask when you enquire — and say which of the two lists above you recognised yourself in.

Three questions to settle it

Have I finished a self-paced course before? If not, that is an argument for structure.
Is my exam remote anyway? For CIPS in India, almost certainly yes.
When is my realistic exam window, and does my chosen mode get me there? Count backwards from the sitting.

Speak to a course advisor and tell them honestly how your last attempt at studying went. That conversation produces a better recommendation than any brochure.
