The short answer
Start with Fundamentals of Shipping if you have never worked a shipment. Take Freight Forwarding or the Certificate in Shipping and Freight Forwarding if you already run bookings and documents and want to do it properly; the Certificate ends with a full shipment simulation and is the broader of the two. Add Containerisation, Sea Port Operations or Break Bulk depending on whether you sit on the liner, terminal or project side. Add IMDG or Marine Insurance when your role touches dangerous goods or claims. Take CSFFP when you want an examined designation after your name, and the Strategic programme when you manage the P&L.
How a forwarding business is organised
A freight forwarder in India, whether in Mumbai, Chennai, Mundra, Kochi or Delhi NCR, runs on a handful of job families: sales and pricing (quoting, rate management, carrier procurement), operations (bookings, coordination with carriers, CHAs and truckers, exception handling), documentation (bills of lading, airway bills, invoices, certificates of origin, shipping bills), customs liaison (working with licensed customs brokers), finance (freight accounting, demurrage and detention, claims), and management. Liner agencies, NVOCCs, terminals and ports have their own versions. The courses below are grouped by those jobs rather than by title, because titles vary from one company to the next.
Start here: Fundamentals of Shipping (49 hours)
Twenty-one modules through the whole shipment lifecycle: maritime transport, ship types and vessel operations, ports and terminals, roles in freight forwarding, cargo and container planning, containerisation, the export and import operational workflow, applying Incoterms 2020, documentation essentials and more. Written for beginners, career starters and coordinators who need to understand what happens behind every shipment. Course page.
Operations and documentation
- Freight Forwarding (48 hours). Sixteen modules: the role of forwarding in global trade, the export-import shipment lifecycle, executing ocean, air and multimodal tasks, core documentation, operational Incoterms and commercial responsibilities, cargo insurance and claims, stakeholder coordination, pricing and quoting with commercial awareness, managing customer expectations and service failures. The course for people who want to master forwarding "from booking to delivery". Course page.
- Certificate in Shipping and Freight Forwarding (45 hours). Twenty modules: the freight ecosystem, stakeholders and service providers, ocean freight operations, ocean booking, charges and demurrage, air freight operations, multimodal and intermodal transport, dangerous goods and specialised cargo, Incoterms 2020, trade documentation and finance, customs and compliance, freight pricing, cargo insurance and claims, digital forwarding and sustainability, ending with an end-to-end shipment simulation. Built to the CILT professional framework; the exact CILT status is stated on the course page. Course page. The CILT ladder itself is explained in CILT qualifications in India.
Pricing and commercial
Both operations courses carry pricing content, and the Strategic Shipping and Freight Forwarding programme goes deeper: freight pricing, rate management and cost engineering, service structures and forwarding models, designing customer-centric freight solutions. If you quote for a living, that is your module set. For the contractual rules behind every quote, see Incoterms 2020 and international trade courses.
Liner, port and terminal roles
- Containerisation and Shipping (45 hours). Container types and selection, vessels and fleet architecture, port and terminal operations, global routes and chokepoints, the container shipping lifecycle, carriers and alliances, documentation and compliance, international maritime regulation. For liner agency staff, coordinators and terminal teams. Course page.
- Sea Port Operations (46 hours). Port infrastructure, vessel calls, cargo handling, yard flow, safety and security, customs collaboration, digitalisation, sustainability and resilience. For port and terminal operations teams and anyone preparing for maritime and port roles. Course page.
Project and break bulk cargo
Break Bulk Cargo Operations (48 hours). Sixteen modules on oversized, heavy and non-containerised cargo: cargo types, vessel types and handling equipment, port operations for break bulk, cargo planning and stowage, lashing and securing, weight distribution and stability calculations, project cargo and heavy-lift logistics. For shipping, port, forwarding and heavy-lift professionals, and increasingly for anyone moving wind, infrastructure or industrial project cargo through Indian ports. Course page.
Dangerous goods and compliance
Fundamentals of IMDG (47 hours). The International Maritime Dangerous Goods Code: regulatory architecture, classification, marine pollutants, the shipper's identification process, packaging and UN performance packaging, marks, labels and placards, documentation and declarations. This is an awareness-level programme for shipping, freight, port, warehouse, documentation and compliance staff. It does not replace the function-specific training the Code requires an employer to provide for people who classify, pack, mark or document dangerous goods for sea transport, and we do not present it as such. Course page.
Ethics in Shipping (45 hours). Corruption and bribery risk in ports and logistics, documentation and trade integrity, sanctions compliance, forwarder responsibilities, labour and human rights at sea, seafarer welfare. For compliance leads and managers. Course page.
Insurance, claims and law
Marine Insurance and Mercantile Law (45 hours). Marine insurance principles, the market and Lloyd's, policy selection and interpretation, cargo underwriting and premium rating, hull and machinery, freight and P&I cover, risk assessment and loss prevention, claims handling, general average, salvage and surveying, maritime contracting. For shipping, logistics, freight, insurance and legal professionals who handle claims or liability. Course page.
Management and strategy
- Strategic Shipping and Freight Forwarding (48 hours). Global trade shifts and network design, service models, pricing and cost engineering, documentation, Incoterms, customs and liability at a management level, digitalisation and the freight technology stack (TMS, visibility, automation), aligning strategy with trade facilitation. For forwarding managers and owners. Course page.
- AI in Shipping and Freight Forwarding (47 hours). Visibility and exception handling, routing and scheduling, documentation and compliance automation, pricing and quotation, AI-supported service workflows. Course page.
The credentials
- Certified Shipping and Freight Forwarding Professional (CSFFP), awarded by IPSCMI. A live online programme across eleven modules on trade flows, import and export operations, documentation, customs compliance, Incoterms 2020, freight pricing and risk management, leading to IPSCMI's examination. IPSCMI designations are kept by recertifying every five years; IPSCMI makes no claim of third-party accreditation and neither do we on its behalf. Course page.
- Certificate in Shipping and Freight Forwarding, above, built to CILT's framework.
- CILT International Certificate and Diploma and ASCM CLTD for the wider logistics ladder; see logistics certification in India.
A note on customs: customs broker licensing in India is granted by the customs authorities through their own examination and regulations. No training course, ours included, confers a customs broker licence, and we do not describe any course as a route to one.
Formats and delivery in India
Ten of the eleven courses are self-paced on our learning platform with the guided hours shown; CSFFP runs live online in cohorts with recordings and a self-paced option. The content is the same in Mumbai, Chennai, Mundra, Visakhapatnam or Kolkata. Advisors are available in person at our New Delhi, Noida, Pune, Hyderabad and Kochi centres; Kochi, with its container transhipment terminal and export bodies, has its own logistics training page. Tuition is shown in Indian rupees on course pages for visitors in India.

Frequently asked questions
Which shipping course is best in India for beginners? Fundamentals of Shipping, then Freight Forwarding or the Certificate in Shipping and Freight Forwarding once you are working.
Is there a freight forwarding certification in India? The IPSCMI Certified Shipping and Freight Forwarding Professional is an examined designation we deliver live online; the Certificate in Shipping and Freight Forwarding is a programme certificate built to CILT's framework.
How long does a shipping course take? Our self-paced shipping programmes list 45 to 49 guided hours each; CSFFP runs as a cohort over several weeks.
