CILT Exam in Saudi Arabia: Format, Test Centers and How to Book

Read this guide in Arabic: اقرأ بالعربية

The single biggest misunderstanding we correct in class is this: the CILT exam in Saudi Arabia is not a computer test you book for next Tuesday at a test center down the road. It works differently, and once you understand the difference the whole timeline of your qualification makes more sense. Here is how the assessment runs for candidates in Saudi Arabia, where you sit it, how booking works and what exam day looks like. For the entry rules, see our guide to CILT requirements and eligibility.

How CILT assessment actually works

CILT is a professional institute that awards its qualifications through accredited training centers. You are not an anonymous candidate booking a seat in a public testing network. You are registered by your center, entered for a scheduled sitting, and assessed on papers set and approved by CILT.

For the International Diploma in Logistics and Transport the assessment is by written examination, one paper per unit, taken at the end of the study period for that unit. Some units and some programs also carry assignment work through the center. Your cohort is told exactly which applies before you start, and it is a fair question to ask at enrollment.

The practical consequence is that dates are fixed rather than chosen. CILT runs a small number of assessment sittings each year, typically two, and entries close well ahead of them. Miss the entry deadline and you are waiting for the next cycle, not for next week.

This is a written exam, not a tick box test. Expect questions that ask you to explain, compare, justify and apply, with longer written answers and at least one essay style question in the mix. That is a real shift for candidates who last sat a multiple choice certification exam and remember it as a memory game.

Two things follow from that, and both matter more than any study guide.

First, examiners reward application. An answer that says what a concept is will score, an answer that shows how it plays out in a port operation, a cross docking facility or a distribution run to Jeddah will score higher. Bring your own workplace into the answer.

Second, structure carries marks. A short plan in the margin before you write, then a clear opening line that answers the question directly, then the supporting points. Our trainers see plenty of strong logistics people lose marks not because they do not know the answer but because it is buried in paragraph four.

Duration and the exact mark scheme are stated on the timetable and instructions issued for your sitting. We deliberately do not quote figures here because they are set per assessment and per unit, and a number copied from a forum is the worst thing to plan around.

Where you sit the CILT exam in Saudi Arabia

There is no public CILT test center network in the Kingdom in the way there is for some IT or project management exams. You sit the paper under supervised conditions arranged by your accredited center. In practice that means the training venue where your cohort runs, with an approved invigilator present.

For our candidates that is Riyadh, Jeddah or Al Khobar, which also covers people working in Dammam, Ras Tanura and the wider Eastern Province. City schedules sit on the cohort pages, for example our CILT course in Riyadh. Candidates on live online cohorts, including those based near NEOM, the Red Sea project or in smaller industrial cities, should ask early about the supervised arrangement for their sitting, since that is agreed case by case rather than assumed.

How to book the CILT exam, step by step

  1. Confirm your target sitting with the center before you enroll, and work backwards from it. Everything else in the plan hangs off that date.
  2. Complete registration with CILT International through the center, with your name exactly as printed in your passport.
  3. Keep your candidate number somewhere you will still find it in a year. Results and certificate queries all run through it.
  4. Confirm your unit entries. Entering for more units than you can realistically prepare is the most expensive optimism in this qualification.
  5. Get written confirmation of the entry deadline, the sitting date and the venue, then put all three in your own calendar rather than trusting a group chat.

If your employer is paying, start the internal approval at the same time as step one. Finance cycles in large Saudi organizations move slower than exam deadlines, and we have seen well prepared candidates lose a sitting to a purchase order rather than to the syllabus.

What ID do you need on exam day

  • Original photo identification, meaning your passport or Iqama. The name must match your registration exactly, so fix any spelling mismatch months before, not on the morning.
  • Your candidate number and any documentation the center issues for the sitting.
  • Pens that work, a spare, and a simple calculator if your unit permits one. Confirm the calculator rule rather than assuming it.
  • Nothing else on the desk. Phones, smart watches and notes stay outside the room, and this is enforced.

Exam day, and how to spend the time

Arrive early enough that traffic is somebody else's problem. Riyadh and Jeddah both punish optimistic timing, and starting a written paper flustered costs more marks than one extra hour of revision would have earned.

When the paper starts, read all of it before you write anything. Decide the order you will answer in, and give the questions worth the most marks the most time. Watch the clock at the halfway point, because the classic failure pattern is a beautiful first answer and a rushed final one.

If a question looks unfamiliar, look for the operational situation underneath it. The syllabus is finite, and almost every question is a familiar concept dressed in a scenario you have not seen before.

Deferring, missing a sitting and results

Life happens, and a deferral is usually possible if you raise it early with the center. Leaving it until the week of the exam limits the options and can cost a fee, so tell us as soon as you know. A missed sitting without notice is the worst outcome, because it wastes both the entry and the study cycle.

Results are released to the center on a published schedule after the sitting rather than on screen at the end, which is unfamiliar to anyone used to instant certification results. If a unit does not go your way, you repeat that unit at a later sitting rather than starting the qualification again.

The best way to avoid all of that is to walk in prepared, which is exactly what our study plan for passing the CILT exam first time is built for. If you want to know what a pass is worth in the local market first, read our piece on CILT salaries in Saudi Arabia. Assessment arrangements are reviewed periodically, so confirm the current position on the CILT International qualification page and with your center.

Frequently asked questions

Is the CILT exam multiple choice?

No. CILT assessment at Diploma level is by written examination with longer written answers and essay style questions, and some programs also include assignment work through the center. Candidates who prepare as if it were a multiple choice test tend to struggle. You are being asked to apply ideas, not recall definitions.

Where can I take the CILT exam in Saudi Arabia?

There is no public CILT test center network in the Kingdom. You sit the paper under supervised conditions arranged by your accredited training center, which for our candidates means Riyadh, Jeddah or Al Khobar. Candidates on live online cohorts should confirm the supervised arrangement with the center well before the sitting.

How often are CILT exams held?

CILT runs a small number of scheduled assessment sittings each year, typically two, rather than on demand testing. Entries close weeks before the sitting itself. That is why we always fix the target sitting first and build the study plan backwards from it.

Can I take the CILT exam in Arabic?

The CILT International assessments are set and marked in English, and you write your answers in English. Our trainers in Saudi Arabia explain concepts bilingually in class where it helps, but exam writing practice in English is part of the preparation. If your written English is rusty, build extra practice time into the plan.

What happens if I fail a CILT unit?

You repeat that unit at a later sitting rather than starting the whole qualification again, and you pay a part fee rather than the full program fee. The larger cost is the wait for the next cycle. Talk to your trainer about what went wrong before you enter again, because the same study habit usually produces the same result.
