Lean Six Sigma Green Belt Practice Questions with Answers and Explanations

The quickest way to test your readiness is to sit with scenario questions and be honest about why you picked each answer. Green Belt questions rarely ask for a definition. They describe a situation and ask what to do next, which is a different skill from recognizing a term.

The ten below were written by our trainers in the style our Saudi candidates meet on the day. They are our own material, not exam questions, and they cover the ground of the Lean Six Sigma Green Belt course. Read the explanation even when you got it right.

Ten Green Belt practice questions

Question 1: Writing the problem statement

A packaging team in Yanbu writes its problem statement as: "The old sealing machine causes too many rejected cartons and should be replaced." What is wrong with it?

A. Nothing. It identifies the cause and saves time in Analyze.

B. It contains a presumed cause and a proposed solution, and gives no baseline or timeframe.

C. It fails to state the capital budget available for the replacement.

D. Problem statements should be written after the Measure phase.

Answer: B. A problem statement describes the gap, not the cause and not the fix. Naming the machine closes off every other cause before you have evidence. A usable version reads: carton rejects on line 3 averaged 4.2 percent over six months against a target of 1.5 percent.

Question 2: Setting the boundaries

A Riyadh hospital pharmacy team starts a project on discharge medication delays. In the first meeting they disagree about where the process begins and ends. Which tool settles this?

A. A cause and effect diagram.

B. A control chart of daily discharge times.

C. A SIPOC map.

D. A hypothesis test comparing wards.

Answer: C. SIPOC exists to agree the start point, the end point and who supplies and receives the process. Skipping it is how projects quietly expand until they can never close.

Question 3: Choosing the right chart

In a Dammam bank operations center you record whether each account opening file is complete or incomplete. What data type is this and what would you chart?

A. Continuous data, charted with an individuals and moving range chart.

B. Attribute data, charted with a p chart for the proportion of defective files.

C. Continuous data, charted with an X bar and R chart.

D. Attribute data, charted with a histogram of mean completeness.

Answer: B. Complete or incomplete is a pass or fail classification, so it is attribute data and the proportion defective belongs on a p chart. Data type drives the chart, the test and the sample size, so identify it first.

Question 4: When the data is the problem

At a Jubail plant, two inspectors measuring the same ten parts produce noticeably different thickness readings. A study shows that a large share of the observed variation comes from the measurement system itself. What next?

A. Increase the sample size so the differences average out.

B. Move to Analyze, since the process is clearly unstable.

C. Fix the measurement system first: standardize the method, train and calibrate, then repeat the study before trusting any baseline.

D. Use only the readings from the more experienced inspector.

Answer: C. If the gauge cannot be trusted, every number after it is fiction, and a bigger sample of unreliable data is still unreliable. Measurement system analysis is the least popular topic on the syllabus and one of the most examined.

Question 5: Reading capability indices

A filling line near Jeddah returns a Cp of 1.6 and a Cpk of 0.8. What does that tell you?

A. The process varies far too much and needs a fundamental redesign.

B. The spread is acceptable, but the process is running off center relative to the specification limits, so centering it is the first move.

C. The data cannot be normal, so the indices are meaningless.

D. The customer specification is too tight and should be renegotiated.

Answer: B. Cp looks only at spread against the specification width; Cpk also accounts for where the process is sitting. A high Cp with a low Cpk is the signature of a capable process aimed at the wrong place, and centering is usually cheaper than reducing variation.

Question 6: Jumping to the answer

A team studying container release delays at Jeddah Islamic Port brainstorms for twenty minutes and concludes the fix is to hire two more clerks. What is the flaw?

A. No flaw, since added capacity always reduces cycle time.

B. They moved to a solution without confirming a root cause with data. The delay may sit in document approval or customs handoffs rather than clerk capacity.

C. They should have run a designed experiment before the brainstorm.

D. Hiring decisions belong in the Define phase.

Answer: B. Brainstorming produces candidate causes, not verified ones. Adding people to a process whose bottleneck is an approval step raises cost and changes nothing, and it is one of the most common improvement failures we see in the Kingdom.

Question 7: Selecting a test

You want to know whether mean handling time differs between the morning and night shifts. The data is continuous, roughly normal, and the groups are independent. Which test fits?

A. A chi square test of independence.

B. A two sample t test.

C. A paired t test.

D. A capability study on each shift.

Answer: B. Two independent groups with a continuous, roughly normal response points to a two sample t test. A paired test needs the same subjects measured twice, and chi square is for counts in categories.

Question 8: Before the full rollout

A Riyadh hospital team has designed a promising change to its discharge process and wants to launch it across all fourteen wards on Monday. What comes first?

A. Full rollout, so the benefit starts immediately.

B. A pilot on one or two wards, measured against the baseline, then scale using what it teaches.

C. Write the control plan and close the project.

D. Return to Define and rewrite the charter.

Answer: B. Piloting is a risk control, and it gives you the evidence to win over the wards that were not involved. A change that fails at scale is very hard to attempt twice, because people remember the first one.

Question 9: A chart with no violations

A control chart of daily output shows every point inside the control limits, but the last nine sit below the center line. What does this indicate?

A. Nothing worth acting on, since no point is outside the limits.

B. A special cause: a sustained run on one side of the center line signals a shift in the process mean.

C. The control limits were calculated incorrectly and should be widened.

D. The measurement system has failed.

Answer: B. Control charts are read for patterns, not only for points outside the limits. A long run on one side, a trend, or cycling all suggest something changed. This catches more candidates than any other question in our classes, because people learn the limits and forget the run rules.

Question 10: Why improvements fade

Six months after a successful Kaizen event at a Ma'aden maintenance store, the gains have gone and old habits are back. What was missing?

A. A larger budget for the improvement.

B. A control plan with a named process owner, standard work and a metric somebody actually reviews.

C. A Black Belt on the team.

D. More statistical training for operators.

Answer: B. Control is the phase teams skip because the exciting part is over. Without an owner, standard work and a monitored measure, a process reverts to whatever is easiest for the people doing it. How to actually use practice questions

Most candidates use them badly: answer fifty, check the percentage, feel relieved or anxious, learn nothing they can act on. Do this instead. Answer in blocks of ten under a clock. For every question you got wrong, and every one you guessed correctly, write one line naming what failed: the content, the DMAIC phase logic, the data type, or misreading the stem. After forty questions you will see two or three repeat offenders, and those are your revision plan for the week.

Then say your reasoning out loud to a colleague. If you cannot explain why the correct option beats the one you chose, you memorized an answer rather than repaired a gap. Where to get full mock exams

Free question banks online are uneven. Many are written against a different syllabus and some contain answers that are simply wrong. Use them for volume, never as your source of truth.

Are these real Lean Six Sigma Green Belt exam questions?

No. Every question here was written by our own trainers to match the style and difficulty candidates meet on the day. Sharing live exam content would breach exam rules for any provider. Use these to test your reasoning, not to predict questions.

How many practice questions should I do before the exam?

Volume matters less than review quality. Two to three hundred questions worked through properly, with a written note on why each error happened, beats a thousand skimmed. Most of our candidates start serious practice in week five of an eight week plan.

What topics come up most in Green Belt questions?

They cluster around choosing the right tool for the DMAIC phase you are in, identifying data types, measurement system analysis, capability indices and control chart interpretation. Lean tools such as waste, 5S and value stream mapping appear on the Improve side. Define is easy to underestimate because it looks simple.

Is the Green Belt exam multiple choice?

Scenario based multiple choice is the format to prepare for. The exact question count, duration and pass mark are confirmed with each cohort by our training team, so ask us in writing when you enroll rather than relying on figures found online.
