CIPS vs CSCP: Procurement Qualification or Supply Chain Certification?
Two of the most respected credentials in the field come from two different institutions, with two different centres of gravity. CIPS is the chartered body of the procurement profession; the APICS CSCP from ASCM is the end to end supply chain certification. Choosing between them starts with where your work sits.
Scope
CIPS goes deep on the buying side: specification, sourcing strategy, tendering, contracting, negotiation, supplier relationships, contract and financial management, ethics and risk, the 13 stage Procurement Cycle. CSCP spans the whole chain: demand and forecasting, network design, sourcing, operations and inventory, logistics, relationships, risk and optimisation.
Structure and exams
CIPS is a laddered qualification: Levels 2 to 6, multiple modules per level, each with its own OR or CR exam, roughly a year per Diploma level, culminating in MCIPS chartered membership with CPD obligations. CSCP is a single certification: one 150 question, 3.5 hour exam over eight modules, ~100 hours of preparation, maintained with 75 points every five years.
Recognition
CIPS is UK chartered and Ofqual regulated, with formal recognition in Dubai and Bahrain and strong employer demand across the Gulf, UK and India, CIPS reports over half of employers request MCIPS. CSCP is the ASCM/APICS global standard, held by professionals in a network of over 125,000 APICS certified individuals, and most requested for cross functional supply chain roles.
