The short answer

If you manage contracts as part of a procurement role and want to stop relying on the legal team for every clause, take Contracts Simplified. If your weak point is agreeing terms, take Procurement Negotiations. If you run tenders and contracts inside projects, take Project Management in Procurement, or PMPPC if you want the designation. If contracts are your profession and you want letters after your name, take CICCM, and check the eligibility rule first.

The contract lifecycle, and who owns which part

In most Indian organisations a contract passes through five hands: the requisitioner who defines the need, the buyer or sourcing specialist who runs the tender and negotiates, the contract manager who forms the contract and manages delivery, change and claims, legal who reviews risk and drafts protective clauses, and finance who manages payments, retentions and penalties. Where there is no dedicated contract manager, the buyer does the job without training for it. That is the gap these courses close. None of them replaces legal advice on a specific contract; they make you a better client for it.

Course by course

Contracts Simplified for Procurement Professionals (46 hours)

Sixteen modules: the strategic role of contracts in procurement, legal foundations and procurement contexts, a legal and commercial glossary, drafting and interpretation, commercial clauses (pricing, performance, liability), negotiating terms and conditions, contract risk management with registers and compliance, regulatory, ethical and ESG compliance, lifecycle management from creation to renewal and exit, dispute resolution and claims management. Written for procurement professionals and sourcing specialists who need to read, negotiate and manage contracts with confidence. Course page.

Procurement Negotiations (47 hours)

Eighteen modules: negotiation fundamentals in procurement, the psychology of negotiation and cognitive bias, strategy with BATNA, ZOPA and supplier positioning, preparation and stakeholder mapping, cost and price analysis for negotiators, anchoring, framing and concession management, communication and active listening, advanced scenarios, managing conflict and deadlock, and structured review. For buyers and category managers who need measurable results from every supplier discussion. Course page.

Project Management in Procurement (47 hours)

Seventeen modules connecting project management to procurement and contracting: methodologies (waterfall, agile, PRINCE2, PMBOK) applied to procurement, the procurement project charter and scope, stakeholder governance, translating business needs into sourcing strategy and contract design, scheduling and resources, risk across the lifecycle, tendering, evaluation and award, contract formation and commercial controls, mobilisation and post-award implementation, change control and commercial outcomes. For procurement staff, contract managers and project teams running structured procurements. Course page.

PMPPC (IPSCMI)

The Project Management Professional in Procurement and Contracting is IPSCMI's credential for the same territory: planning procurement strategies aligned to project goals, supplier selection and negotiation, contract management, project risk and delivery. Live online with a self-paced option, leading to IPSCMI's examination. Course page.

CICCM: the designation for contract managers

The Certified International Commercial Contracts Manager is awarded by IPSCMI. In IPSCMI's own words the requirements are an "AA degree OR more than three years of experience in business" and "satisfactory completion of a 3 hour examination", which is multiple choice and covers the International Commercial Contracts Management Body of Knowledge, plus completion of an application and payment of IPSCMI's fees. "Successful candidates are granted the designation of CICCM." IPSCMI allows up to five years to complete the requirements, with waivers at the discretion of its Board of Examiners. Designations are kept by recertifying every five years with continuing-education points or a retake. IPSCMI makes no claim of third-party accreditation and neither do we on its behalf.

Our CICCM course is live online, built around practical exercises, contract-focused case studies, assessments, videos and group discussion, and covers contract administration concepts, contract types, negotiating fair agreements, contract best practice for smooth payment and performance, and claims and disputes. For contract managers, commercial managers and contract administrators in construction, energy, infrastructure, IT and services. Course page.

An Indian bachelor's degree exceeds the associate-degree threshold; without a degree you need more than three years in business, broadly defined.

What these courses are not

They are not legal qualifications and they do not make you a lawyer. They do not confer any statutory registration. They are not a route to arbitration or mediation accreditation, which is held by separate bodies. They do make you the person in the room who understands what the contract says, what it costs, and where the risk sits.

Formats and delivery in India

Contracts Simplified, Procurement Negotiations and Project Management in Procurement are self-paced on our learning platform with the guided hours shown. CICCM and PMPPC run live online in cohorts with recordings and a self-paced option; IPSCMI's examination is arranged through the course. The content is the same in Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai or Kolkata; advisors are available in person at our New Delhi, Noida, Pune, Hyderabad and Kochi centres. Tuition is shown in Indian rupees on course pages for visitors in India; IPSCMI's fees are separate. Companies can run any of these for a procurement or contracts team; see corporate training in India.

Choosing, in four questions

  1. Do you manage contracts as a side of procurement, or as your profession? Side: Contracts Simplified. Profession: CICCM.
  2. Is agreeing terms the hard part? Procurement Negotiations.
  3. Are your contracts inside projects with milestones and change? Project Management in Procurement, or PMPPC for the designation.
  4. Do you buy across borders? Add Incoterms 2020, because the delivery term is a contract term.
