Incoterms Training in Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi trade runs on a different mix from Dubai. Energy, petrochemicals, heavy project cargo and government procurement dominate, and each of those brings its own Incoterms questions. Training for an Abu Dhabi team that only covers container trade misses most of what those teams actually handle.

What Abu Dhabi teams ask about

Project and heavy lift cargo. Oversized units are not containerized, so the four sea rules stay relevant here in a way they no longer are for general trade. FAS in particular still has real use for cargo loaded alongside a vessel.

Bulk commodity movements. FOB and CFR remain the working rules for bulk, and the questions are about laytime, loading risk and the exact point of transfer rather than about containers.

Government and semi government procurement. Tender documents often specify delivered terms, which puts import clearance and duty on the supplier. Suppliers need to know whether they can perform DDP before they price it.

Free zone movements. Goods moving into and out of KIZAD, ADAFZ and the industrial zones raise questions about where customs clearance sits and how that interacts with the chosen rule.

What the training covers

All eleven rules of Incoterms 2020, kept in their two families, with the emphasis placed where an Abu Dhabi team needs it:

• Risk transfer against cost transfer, treated separately, because that is where costly assumptions live
• The four sea rules in proper depth, given how much bulk and project cargo moves here
• When a delivered rule can and cannot be performed, particularly DDP and import tax recovery
• Documentary consequences and how the chosen rule meets a letter of credit
• Writing a term precisely enough to be enforceable, including the named place

Format

Our Mastering Incoterms 2020 course is available self paced online, which most Abu Dhabi teams prefer because it does not require releasing staff for a full day. For organizations that want classroom delivery or a session built around their own contracts, we run group programs on request.

Two situations we work through

A delivered term in a tender. A supplier wins an award on DDP terms and only then discovers it cannot register for tax locally, so the import VAT it expected to recover becomes a real cost against a price already fixed. We work through how to spot this at bid stage and what to propose instead, usually DAP with the buyer handling import clearance.

Project cargo with a long load window. Heavy units sit at a port for weeks before a suitable vessel is available. Under FAS the seller carries risk while the cargo waits alongside. Whether that is acceptable depends on the insurance in place, and the time to settle it is before the contract is signed rather than after a storm.

Procurement and contracts staff, shipping and logistics coordinators, trade finance and documentation teams, and export sales staff who quote delivery terms. No prior shipping background is needed. The course starts from what the rules are and works up to applying them to live documents.

Before you book

Check that any provider teaches the 2020 edition and explains what changed from 2010, because a good deal of material still in circulation is built on the older text. The changes in the 2020 edition are small in number but two of them affect cost directly.
