CLTD Certification Requirements and Eligibility in Egypt
Read this guide in Arabic: اقرأ بالعربية
Every week someone walks into our New Cairo office, or joins a live online session from Alexandria or Ain Sokhna, and asks the same thing before anything else: am I even allowed to sit the CLTD exam? The good news is that ASCM keeps the entry rules simple. The less good news is that Egyptian applicants trip over the details, usually around names, documents and how experience is counted.
This guide covers eligibility and the application itself, nothing more. For the full fee picture in EGP read our article on CLTD certification cost in Egypt, and for test day itself see how the CLTD exam works in Egypt.
What ASCM asks for
ASCM, the body that owns the Certified in Logistics, Transportation and Distribution credential, publishes three routes into the exam. You need only one of them at the time of writing:
- Three years of related business experience, or
- A bachelor's degree or its international equivalent, or
- An active, approved certification such as CPIM, CSCP, CPSM or PMP. ASCM keeps the current list on its site.
Notice what is missing. There is no age limit, no requirement to be an ASCM member, no English test and no minimum job title. A fresh graduate from Cairo University with a commerce degree qualifies on day one. So does a warehouse supervisor in 10th of Ramadan with a technical diploma and four years on the floor.
The experience route is the one that raises questions. ASCM says related business experience, not logistics experience. In our experience that covers planning, procurement, customs clearance, fleet operations, freight forwarding, inventory control, distribution sales support and similar work. Three years as a shipping coordinator at a forwarder in Alexandria counts. Three years as a graphic designer does not, even if the company was a 3PL.
How Egyptian degrees and experience are treated
Egyptian bachelor's degrees are accepted as the international equivalent. A four year degree from Ain Shams, Alexandria University, Helwan, Mansoura, the Arab Academy for Science and Technology, GUC, BUE or AUC all fit. You do not need an equivalency certificate from the Supreme Council of Universities and you do not need a credential evaluation service for CLTD. Keep a scanned copy of the certificate and a simple English translation if the original is in Arabic only.
Experience is where the paperwork matters more. ASCM does not ask you to upload anything when you apply. Eligibility is declared by you, and ASCM reserves the right to check a sample of candidates and ask for proof. If your name comes up, an HR letter on company letterhead stating your title, dates and a one line description of duties is what they want. Arabic letters are the norm in Egypt, so ask HR for an English version or attach a certified translation. Your social insurance record is useful backup because it shows continuous employment dates.
Two points our Cairo candidates often miss. Part time and freelance work counts if you can document it, and periods at different employers can be added together. Internships and university training weeks generally do not count toward the three years.
The application, step by step
- Create a free account on the ASCM website using the exact name that appears on your passport, Latin spelling included. This prevents most of the test day problems we describe in the exam article.
- Decide whether to join ASCM. Membership is optional for eligibility but changes the fees you pay, so weigh it against the numbers in our cost article.
- If you self study, purchase the CLTD Learning System and the exam credit through your ASCM account. If you enroll with us, do not buy the exam twice: our fee includes the course, the exam and the certification fee, as the course page states.
- Confirm your eligibility route during the exam purchase. This is an attestation, not an upload.
- Receive your Authorization to Test. At the time of writing it stays valid for about six months, which is your window to schedule and sit the exam at a Pearson VUE center or online.
- Book your seat through Pearson VUE. Greater Cairo has authorized centers, and online proctoring is available for candidates outside the capital.
Payment to ASCM is in US dollars by card. Several Egyptian banks limit foreign currency card spending or require you to activate international use in advance, so sort that out with your bank a week before you plan to pay.
Mistakes we see in our Egyptian classes
- Name mismatch. Mohamed on the passport, Mohammed on the ASCM account. Pearson VUE staff at the center compare the two character by character and can refuse entry. Fix the account name before your Authorization to Test is issued.
- Waiting for an approval that never comes. There is no eligibility approval email. Some candidates sit for weeks waiting for one and lose part of their six month window.
- Counting experience from the wrong date. Count from the day you started paid, related work, not from graduation and not from the day you decided to move into logistics.
- Buying the wrong product. CLTD and CSCP sit side by side in the ASCM store and both are supply chain credentials. CLTD is the logistics, transportation and warehousing exam. If your job is end to end supply chain design, read about our Certified Supply Chain Professional program before you pay.
- Letting the authorization expire. Six months sounds long. Between Ramadan, the summer holidays and a busy peak season at the port, it goes quickly. Book a date the week your authorization arrives.
If you do not qualify yet
Suppose you have a two year diploma and eighteen months as a dispatcher for an e commerce company in 6th of October City. You are eighteen months away from the experience route. You have three sensible options.
First, start studying now anyway. Nothing stops you from buying the Learning System or joining a training batch before you are eligible; the eligibility question only arises when you purchase the exam. Second, use the gap to earn a credential that has no entry barrier. Our International Diploma in Logistics and Transport and the Certified Shipping and Freight Forwarding Professional are both popular with early career staff in Cairo and Alexandria and give you structured knowledge you will reuse in CLTD. Third, if you already hold PMP or CPIM, you are eligible today through the certification route and can skip the experience count entirely.
What we advise against is stretching the truth on the attestation. ASCM checks, and a revoked credential is far harder to explain to an employer in the Suez Canal Economic Zone than a one year delay.
Documents to keep in one folder
You will rarely be asked for these, but keep them together: passport (valid, same name as your ASCM account), degree certificate with English translation, HR experience letters in English, social insurance record, your ASCM account confirmation and the Authorization to Test email. If you are planning the Gulf relocation route many Egyptian logistics professionals take, the same folder will serve your attestation paperwork later.
Still unsure which route fits you? Our Certified in Logistics, Transportation and Distribution page lists the current program details for Egypt, and the CLTD guides for Egypt hub collects every article in this series.
Frequently asked questions
Can I take the CLTD exam in Egypt without a university degree?
Yes. ASCM accepts three years of related business experience as an alternative to a degree, and an active approved certification such as CPIM or PMP also qualifies. Keep HR letters in English in case ASCM asks for proof.
Does ASCM accept Egyptian university degrees for CLTD eligibility?
Yes. A bachelor's degree from any recognized Egyptian university counts as the international equivalent ASCM refers to. You do not need an equivalency certificate or a credential evaluation; a scanned certificate and an English translation are enough if you are ever asked.
Do I need to be an ASCM member to be eligible for CLTD?
No. Membership is optional and does not affect eligibility. It does change what you pay for the Learning System, the exam and later maintenance, so it is a cost decision rather than an eligibility one.
How long do I have to sit the exam after I buy it?
At the time of writing, ASCM issues an Authorization to Test that stays valid for about six months. You schedule your Pearson VUE seat inside that window. If it lapses you generally have to buy the exam again, so book early.
Does experience gained in the Gulf or abroad count toward the three years?
Yes. ASCM counts related business experience wherever it was earned, so years spent with a forwarder in Dubai or a distributor in Doha add to years in Cairo. Make sure you can document each period with a letter in English.
