How to Become MCIPS: Routes, Requirements and Chartered Status Explained
MCIPS, Member of the Chartered Institute of Procurement & Supply, is what CIPS calls "the globally recognised standard of excellence for the procurement and supply profession." It tells an employer that you are fully qualified and a current, ethically bound member of the profession's chartered body. Here is exactly how you get there.
The four routes to MCIPS
- The qualifications route, complete the CIPS Level 4 Diploma, Level 5 Advanced Diploma and Level 6 Professional Diploma. This is the most common path.
- An accredited degree, a CIPS accredited university programme plus three years' experience.
- The Management Entry Route (MER), for senior professionals: an online 100 question competency assessment built around the Global Standard themes, plus a remote interview; fee £1,000.
- The Corporate Award, an assignment based, exam free programme delivered with employers.
The experience requirement
Whichever route, CIPS requires "at least three years' experience of holding a position of responsibility within procurement and supply," evidenced by a signed letter on company letterhead from your line manager. You apply through the MyCIPS portal.
MCIPS vs MCIPS Chartered
CIPS is precise about the difference: MCIPS recognises that you have met the professional standard; Chartered "builds on this by recognising members who maintain their professional competence." Upgrading is simple for full members, confirm 30 hours of CPD in the previous 12 months and hold a current Ethical Procurement and Supply certificate (the Ethics Test: three assessments at 70%, free for members). Chartered status is confirmed within about three days.
FCIPS
Fellowship is "the highest grade of CIPS membership." Candidates must be MCIPS and a Chief Procurement Officer, a leading consultant or an academic; CIPS encourages Chartered status first.

CIPS's Salary Guide 2025 (with Hays) reports that MCIPS professionals earn 59% more than non MCIPS colleagues, and that over 52% of employers request MCIPS or study towards it when recruiting. In the UK, the 2024 guide put MCIPS average pay at £67,558 versus £43,561 without.
