CIPS Exams Explained: Objective Response vs Constructed Response, Sittings and Remote Invigilation
CIPS exams are computer based, sat either at an exam venue or by remote invigilation "in the comfort of your own home or office," and come in two formats. Knowing which format each module uses, and how it is marked, is half of exam strategy.
Objective Response (OR)
"In OR exams you will select a response from a list of possible answers." Pass mark 70%. At Level 3 every module is a 2 hour OR exam; at Level 4 and Level 5 the 6 credit modules are 1.5 hour OR exams. CIPS warns candidates not to "assume that OR questions are easier than other formats", Diploma level OR papers include scenario based questions, multiple response items where you may not be told how many answers to select, and "choose the answer with the reason" formats.
Constructed Response (CR)
"You'll be expected to create or construct your answer in an essay style or case study style", four questions of 25 marks each, 3 hours, on the 12 credit modules (L4M1, L4M8, L5M1, L5M4). Graded 50% Pass, 60% Merit, 75% Distinction. Command words matter: CIPS publishes guidance on exactly what "evaluate," "explain" and "assess" require.
Sittings and booking
CIPS hosts exams five times a year, March, May, July, September and November, with additional OR only windows. OR candidates choose any of three daily timeslots across the exam week; CR exams run at set times. You must be a current CIPS student member to sit exams; study centre students are booked through their centre.
Remote invigilation
Outside the UK, remote exams run through VICTVS. You need a stable connection, a quiet private room, a Windows or Mac computer (no tablets), webcam and microphone, and a compatible mobile device, and yes, "you can take your remote exam anywhere in the world."
