How Long Does CIPS Take? Study Time, Credits and Duration by Level
CIPS is refreshingly transparent about workload. Every credit "should plan to dedicate 10 hours of study time," each level publishes a Total Qualification Time, and CIPS states that "most learners complete each qualification level within 6 to 12 months, but you can study at your own pace." Here is what that means level by level.
Level 3 Advanced Certificate
30 credits, four core modules plus one elective, each a 2 hour OR exam. TQT 300 hours (200 guided learning, 90 self study, 10 exam hours). CIPS: "we recommend allowing up to 12 months." Level 3 at Blue Ocean Academy.
Level 4 Diploma
60 credits, eight core modules (two 12 credit CR modules, six 6 credit OR modules). TQT 600 hours (250 guided learning, 335 self study, 15 exam hours). CIPS: "we recommend allowing 12 months to finish all eight modules." Membership on completion: Diploma Member. Level 4 at Blue Ocean Academy.
Level 5 Advanced Diploma
60 credits, five core plus three electives from six. TQT 600 hours (250 / 335 / 15). CIPS: "we recommend allowing 12 to 15 months." Membership on completion: Associate Member. Level 5 at Blue Ocean Academy.
To MCIPS
Level 6 completes the qualifications route; with the three year experience requirement (which can accrue while you study), most professionals reach MCIPS eligibility in three to four years from Level 4.
What speeds it up
- Tutor led study: a structured programme paces the syllabus to the exam calendar and removes the drift that stretches self study
- Exam window planning: five sittings a year mean you can pace modules to sit two or three per window
- Exemptions: prior learning may exempt individual modules under the CIPS Exemption Policy
Or start with the Level 4 Diploma, the most popular route to MCIPS.
