The short answer
Two or more years in a business role and a job that touches procurement put you at Level 4, which is where CIPS wants most people to begin and the CIPS qualification Indian employers name most often. Expect eight module exams, something like 600 hours of study on CIPS's planning guide, and twelve to eighteen months if you work full time. You study by distance learning with a tutor and sit exams by remote invigilation. With less experience, begin at Level 3 instead.
Why most people start here
CIPS does not let anyone enter above Level 4. However senior you are, the Diploma is the highest point at which you can join the ladder (CIPS's Management Entry Route for very senior people is a separate process, not a qualification). It is pitched at people with two or more years of business experience, and that experience does not have to be in procurement, which is why Indian candidates from finance, operations, engineering and sales start here alongside buyers. CIPS describes the Diploma as a vocationally related professional qualification, regulated by Ofqual and recognised within the UK framework and several others. The whole ladder from Level 2 to Level 6, the MCIPS rules and Blue Ocean's CIPS record are set out in CIPS certification in India; this page stays on Level 4.
The eight modules, and the job they map to
| Module | What it covers | The job task it sharpens |
|---|---|---|
| Scope and influence of procurement and supply | What procurement is for, its stakeholders, where it adds value | Explaining procurement's contribution to a sceptical business |
| Defining business need | Specifications, requirements, the business case | Writing a specification a supplier can price |
| Commercial contracting | Contract formation, terms, pricing approaches | Reading and shaping the contract before signature |
| Ethical and responsible sourcing | Ethics, sustainability, responsible practice | Running a tender that survives an audit |
| Commercial negotiation | Preparing for and conducting negotiations | Negotiating on cost structure rather than discount |
| Supplier relationships | Managing and developing suppliers | Turning a transactional supplier into a performing one |
| Whole life asset management | Total cost and lifecycle thinking | Buying on total cost of ownership |
| Procurement and supply practices | Bringing the above together in practice | Running the end-to-end process |
CIPS states the Diploma's learning outcomes in terms of the added-value strategies procurement can achieve, devising a business case when sourcing, and market management; our module teaching is built to those outcomes. Course page.
Credits, hours and three realistic timetables
Sixty credits at CIPS's planning guide of ten hours each is about 600 hours. How you spread that depends on how many modules you sit per series. These are planning illustrations, not promises:
| Plan | Modules per series | Series used | Elapsed time | Study per week |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Steady | 1 | 8 | about 16 to 18 months | 7 to 8 hours |
| Standard | 2 | 4 | about 9 to 12 months | 12 to 15 hours |
| Stretch | 3 | 3 | about 6 to 8 months | 18 to 20 hours |
Most working candidates in India choose Standard. Your tutor builds the plan with you at enrolment and adjusts it after your first results; eight modules in two series is possible on paper and rarely wise.
Exam formats and the series calendar
Two formats. Objective response means you choose from given answers; constructed response means you write. All exams are computer-based and can be sat at a CIPS venue or by remote invigilation from home or work. CIPS runs six series a year (January, March, May, July, September and November), and the January and September series carry objective-response papers only, so constructed-response modules have to be placed in March, May, July or November. CIPS publishes which Level 4 modules use which format; your tutor sequences them accordingly. In India CIPS lists one exam venue, in Bengaluru, and only for the Advanced Certificate, which means Level 4 candidates sit by remote invigilation. We book your sittings as your study centre.
The entry rule, and the Level 3 alternative
CIPS's threshold for the Diploma is two or more years of relevant experience in a business environment. If you are short of that, or your role is operational purchasing, start with the Level 3 Advanced Certificate in Procurement and Supply Operations, which CIPS designs for people already in an operational role, and move up to Level 4 afterwards. Level 3 course page; the Level 3 syllabus is summarised on the CIPS hub.
After Level 4
Level 4 leads to the Level 5 Advanced Diploma, then the Level 6 Professional Diploma, and MCIPS requires all three plus at least three years in a position of responsibility with a line-manager letter. Level 5 course page.
Studying in India
Blue Ocean Corporation Private Limited is on CIPS's study-centre finder as an approved centre for distance learning in New Delhi, covering the Certificate through the Advanced Diploma. For Level 4 that means tutor-led online teaching module by module, timed to the series you are sitting, exam technique for both formats, and help with CIPS registration, exam booking and exemption claims. It does not mean classroom batches; our India record is for distance learning, and we say so. Advisors can meet you at our New Delhi, Noida, Pune, Hyderabad and Kochi centres.
Fees
Two bills. CIPS charges registration, membership and an exam fee for each module, set by CIPS and paid to CIPS, so the total depends on how many modules you sit and whether you resit. Our Level 4 tuition is a rupee price on the course page for visitors in India. Anyone quoting a single all-in "CIPS Level 4 cost" is guessing; the advisor gives you both components in writing.
