The short answer
If you need one area of supply chain competence quickly, or your employer wants ASCM-badged learning for a team without putting everyone through a 3.5-hour proctored exam, an ASCM certificate programme is the right size. If you need letters after your name that an international job description will recognise, you need a designation (CSCP, CPIM, CLTD or CTSC), and the certificates are a sensible first step toward one. Nobody should buy a certificate thinking it is a designation; the table above and the course pages say exactly which is which.
Certificate versus designation
ASCM, the Association for Supply Chain Management (formerly APICS), runs two tiers.
- Designations are the credentials you have heard of: CSCP, CPIM, CLTD and CTSC. Each is earned by passing a proctored computer-based exam of 150 questions in 3.5 hours at a Pearson VUE centre or online via OnVUE, scored 200 to 350 with 300 to pass, and kept with 75 maintenance points every five years. They can be used after your name.
- Certificate programmes are shorter, topic-focused courses. They are assessed within the programme rather than by a proctored designation exam, they do not carry post-nominal letters, and they do not have the five-year maintenance cycle. They are the right tool for a specific skill gap and for building toward a designation.
Blue Ocean Academy delivers both tiers in India. The designation explainers are CSCP, CPIM, CLTD and CTSC; the comparison between them is in supply chain certification in India. This page is about the certificates.
The seven programmes
Supply Chain Planning Certificate
Six topics: what synchronised planning is, business planning, demand planning and S&OP, tactical planning (master scheduling, MRP and capacity management), operations execution (purchasing, production activity control and advanced planning systems), and supplier risk management. For supply chain and logistics professionals who need to balance demand and supply, and for procurement and inventory staff who plan purchasing around it. Live online. Course page. If you then want the planning designation, CPIM is the natural next step.
Supply Chain Warehousing Certificate
Seven topics: warehousing and logistics overview, operating a safe workplace, creating a secure workplace, measurement and conversion, inventory and warehouse management, evaluation of transportation modes, and environmental sustainability in warehousing and distribution. For warehouse and logistics staff and for inventory personnel who want operations run to best practice. Live online. Course page. The fuller warehousing route, including the IPSCMI designation and our self-paced programmes, is in warehouse, inventory and planning courses in India.
Supply Chain Procurement Certificate
Six topics: fundamentals of procurement, sourcing strategies, purchase order management and performance measurement, contract management and negotiations, sustainability and ethical sourcing, and procurement evaluation metrics and the intelligent supply chain. For purchasing and procurement professionals working inside supply chain teams and for logistics staff who need to understand how purchasing supports them. Live online. Course page. For the procurement profession's own ladders (CIPS, IPSCMI), see procurement courses in India.
Supply Chain Resilience Certificate
Six topics: what supply chain resilience is, risk management in supply chains, strategic planning with data-driven decisions and collaboration, secure and flexible systems, leadership and resilient culture, and sustainability, innovation and technology. For supply chain and logistics professionals who must keep operations running through disruption, and for sourcing specialists reducing supply risk. Live online. Course page.
Supply Chain Technology Certificate
Six topics: blockchain, advanced analytics and automation, the Internet of Things, cybersecurity, demand planning technologies, and additive manufacturing. For supply chain, logistics, procurement and operations staff adopting digital tools, and a useful companion to the CTSC designation for people leading transformation. Live online. Course page.
Supplier Relationship Management Certificate
Six topics: introduction to SRM, supplier selection and evaluation, supplier development, supplier performance management, supplier risk management, and SRM best practice. For procurement and sourcing professionals who need to turn key suppliers into partners, and for supply chain managers who own supplier performance. Live online. Course page.
Supply Chain Excellence Program
A self-paced, 167-guided-hour programme that builds a clear understanding of core supply chain functions across procurement, logistics and operations and applies them to business scenarios. The broadest of the seven and the one to take if you want a grounding across the chain before choosing a designation. Course page.
Which certificate leads to which designation
Planning Certificate to CPIM; Warehousing Certificate to CLTD; Procurement, SRM and the Excellence Program to CSCP; Resilience and Technology to CTSC (and CSCP). None of the certificates is a prerequisite for any designation, and none exempts you from a designation exam; they prepare the ground.
Delivery in India
Six of the seven run live online in cohorts with recordings; the Supply Chain Excellence Program is self-paced. The content is the same wherever you are in India. Advisors are available in person at our New Delhi, Noida, Pune, Hyderabad and Kochi centres. Tuition is shown in Indian rupees on course pages for visitors in India; where ASCM charges a programme or assessment fee it is set by ASCM and stated on the course page or in the enquiry reply. Companies run certificate programmes for whole teams through corporate training in India.
Choosing, in three questions
- Do you need letters after your name? Then a designation, not a certificate; start with the comparison.
- Which single area is your gap? Pick the matching certificate from the table.
- Are you training a team? Certificates scale across a team more easily than designation exams; mix the two by role.
Frequently asked questions
Are ASCM certificates the same as ASCM certification? No. Designations (CSCP, CPIM, CLTD, CTSC) are earned by a proctored exam and carry post-nominal letters; certificate programmes are shorter topic courses assessed within the programme.
Do ASCM certificates expire? Certificate programmes do not carry the five-year, 75-point maintenance cycle that designations do. Check the course page for what the certificate states.
Which ASCM certificate should I take first? The one matching your current role: planning for planners, warehousing for warehouse staff, procurement or SRM for buyers, resilience or technology for managers.
Is an ASCM certificate recognised by employers in India? Employers recognise the ASCM name; a certificate evidences focused learning, while a designation evidences a passed external exam. Use each for what it is.
Can I do an ASCM certificate online in India? Yes. Six run live online in cohorts and the Supply Chain Excellence Program is self-paced.
